Andrew Crooks and Ivan Joel Group Exhibition

Recently, two of our faculty members were included in the group exhibition, Overseas Artists in Beijing, curated by Gary Mok at Another Art Gallery, located in Shunyi, Beijing. Andrew Crooks and Ivan Joel and the other 6 artists included are foreign national artists who have chosen to make Beijing their living and working location.

In response to being asked about their work’s relationship to the city of Beijing, Crooks and Joel answered:

Crooks: “My art studio in Songzhuang is my favorite island in the sea of Beijing. The sights and sounds during the trip there is the inspiration for what happens when I arrive”.

Joel: “Beijing is a very inspiring city, full of energy and extremely rich culture. Beijing is a very charming place to work as an artist but it is really challenging in many aspects. It is lik&

101; a gentle monster, it’s amazing, if you lik&

101; monsters”.

Joel’s work for the exhibition included a 3D printed sculpture and animation entitled “Greek Flower”. Crooks’ work were a few of his large formatted photographic prints consisting of hand-built dramatic sets. His piece “Dragon Boat” was included, amongst others.

Ivan Joel teaches Spatial Design and Andrew Crooks teaches Photography and the Moving Image here at the IFC.
