Editor’s Note: CAFAIFC Walking Workshop is composed of a wide range of social practical 
projects, aiming to output and exchange our thirteen years of teaching methodology and 
philosophy, so as to have a positive impact on the basic art education of China.  


One April 8 and 9, two teachers from CAFAIFC, He Yanan and Shi Chong, went to Harrow 
Beijing International School and held a workshop about the Silk Road – Dunhuang Art for 12 students there. They encouraged the students to learn, explore and 
perceive the extensive and profound Chinese culture by integrating theory and practice. 
Silk Road - Dunhuang Art is accumulated and integrated from different historical and 
cultural backgrounds, and Harrow Beijing International School is also in a multicultural 
context. Therefore, the project emphasized culture fusion and extension as well as the 
connection between traditional and contemporary art.   


The first part of the workshop was a lecture about the Silk Road, Dunhuang, Buddhism and 
the background of Dunhuang art. And then under the guidance of the teachers, the 
students completed a set of installation and a series of mural paintings.  The art installation
 consists of a series of small paintings and collages cr&

101;ated by 12 students in a short period
 of time. To make the works, the students were asked to try to explore and study the 
features of Dunhuang murals, including the use of lines and colors, a variety of traditional 
pattern forms and narrative techniques of expression. At the same time, the teachers also 
encouraged them to put more understanding and creativity into the work. In the end, the 
works from individual student were incorporated into the entire art installation inspired by 
one of the important characteristics of Dunhuang art, namely various historical and cultural 
backgrounds.  


The series of murals were based on students’ study and practice of Dunhuang mural art in 
the last stage. Students chose the subjects they are interested in, and used traditional 
mural paints and materials to cr&

101;ate the works. Although this was a new attempt for all 
the students and was also the largest work they had ever cr&

101;ated, they completed the 
works satisfactorily due to their enthusiasm for the study of Dunhuang art and the strong 
curiosity about Chinese ancient culture. In the end, two groups of works, installation and 
murals, jo&

105;ntly presented a visual talk between contemporary and traditional art from 
different cultural backgrounds.  


Very soon, two days’ workshop came to its end. The students from Harrow Beijing 
International School accomplished many pieces of art creation with their talent, dedication 
and enthusiasm, reflecting our new generation’s respect and curiosity towards traditional 
culture. Meanwhile, IFC Walking Workshop felt honored to implant a seed of Chinese 
culture into such a well-known international school and let it grow in the students’ mind.
