WHAT IF ARCHITECTURE CAN HELP PEOPLE TO HEAL?
When and where people are most upset? According to my research, many people believe it is when they receive the news that the one they love passed away and they must experience the separation with their beloved ones in the funeral. The funeral parlor is the most important space for them to release their emotions. However, many funeral parlors now follow the ancient style with very inhumane designs, such as vague functional partitions, lack of greenery and the use of cold, hard materials inside. This affects how people feel and how they interact with each other. So, I want to design a memorial hall with a human touch, infusing the space with elements of care. I want the families of the deceased to feel a sense of warmth and happiness in this space to relieve their misery. The site I choose is Huagang Park in Hangzhou, which is on an island with a pleasant climate, surrounded by greenery and inhabited mainly by elderly people. Also, I draw inspiration from the Japanese architect Toyo Ito's 'Meditation No Mori', the Gifu Municipal Funeral Hall, and design a circular roof with undulating waves, which symbolizes the ups and downs we encounter in our lives. Throughout the funeral, people walk from the land to the sea. In addition, I set up three courtyards, and four functional areas: a farewell room, a meditation room, a discussion space and a waiting area. Based on my understanding of the elements of warmth and comfort, I use wooden materials, warm furniture, and lighting to heal the hearts of families of the deceased.
