Nowadays, because of the rising cost of having children, more people prefer to have pets. The World birth rate is declining while the rate of owning pets is going up. To explore why more people own pets in a comprehensive perspective, I have conducted a research and found that most of pets owners consider their pets as family members. Meanwhile, I found that having a pet could help the owners to be more healthy and live longer. I conducted a survey in the campus and found out 80% of people own a pet and 85% of them have a cat or a dog.The result indicated that there is a huge market on the items for cats and dogs. Aside from this, I found that in furniture design, the pets' needs are rarely considered. So I decided to design a furniture that could benefit owners and pets at the same time. Project A: “The Petxible Shelf” The lower part is mainly for dogs and the upper part is for cats. Users could change the position of different layers themselves. The regular grid of wholes in the back board could allow them to relocate the shelves easily. Owners could hang daily products and pets could choose their space to rest on the shelves. Project B: “The CU Shelf” This is a modular stackable furniture that can be used in different ways. The whole furniture had four layers in different heights. Users could change each module into different directions to make their own arrangements with the different parts to better fit their needs and space possibilities. It provides more playing or living space for the pets and functional flexibility for the owners. Owners could buy changeable stuffs for pets if the old one is damaged.
