The inspiration for this work comes from my contemplation on whether having a spiritual sustenance is beneficial or not. In today's society, adults often teach children not to overly rely on a particular thing or person to fulfill their emotional needs. However, I believe that having a spiritual sustenance is essential for humans, just like how a host is necessary for a parasitic plant. People need to obtain spiritual redemption and comfort from their spiritual sustenance, which serves as their spiritual host. The black mandala is a plant with a slight hallucinogenic substance in its fragrance. A traditional saying is that it can fulfill people's wishes, but it needs to be watered with blood. This made me think about how people sometimes rely too much on their spiritual sustenance, just like how the black mandala relies on blood to grow. However, if people rely too much on their spiritual sustenance, they may be harmed in return. Therefore, I incorporated the element of the black mandala into my costume design to showcase the theme of spiritual sustenance. Through my research, I found that most parasitic plants obtain nutrition through parasitic roots from their hosts. Hence, I extracted and designed elements from parasitic roots. Through this work, I hope to express the importance of spiritual sustenance in human life. Perhaps we do not need to be so adamancy that nothing can affect our emotions.
