In Chinese, my name Quanlin means “unstoppable water” and “everlasting rain”. In my hometown, the never-ceasing rain nourishes the tea trees. In my mind, nature can enlighten the spirit. I have been living with nature since I was born. As a result, I have learned to cherish life.

With the development of industrialization, discarded waste is increasing environmental pollution. This is leading to global warming, water pollution and so on. These environmental problems are endangering all living things on earth, among which are human beings. The purpose of my work is to arouse people's awareness of environmental issues. Because the theme of this project is "restart", I have tried to use natural, degradable materials to replace chemical materials such as plastics. Based on my experience and feelings, I understand "restart" as "recycle". Besides, I think consumer behavior should contribute to environmental protection. I believe that as designers we can improve the climate issue and reduce environmental pollution.

My work is an ECO-lampshade named “ ECO-rock tea lamp”. In the process of my research, I compared a variety of degradable materials from nature. My father is a tea-making inheritor (BeiYan). And my family's cultural background made me want to study tea. Plenty of people in China drinks tea on a daily basis. That’s why I wanted to recycle used tea that has been around us for a long time. I collected a lot of tea made by my father, and, together with fallen leaves, transformed it into a lampshade. I used two bowls of different sizes to press used tea into a shape similar to a bowl. Its color is due to the tea used: a dark brown kind of Oolong tea. When the lamp is turned on, the tea leaves will emit a dense fragrance as the temperature of the light bulb increases. To hold the lampshade made out of tea around any light bulb I conceived a flexible bamboo structure that can attach to any light. In the future I hope to continue raising awareness to nature trough my designs. Thus it will continue the same harmony that people have enjoyed while drinking tea during so many centuries.
